Water Conservation Tips

Water conservation doesn't mean going without. It means doing more with less. Here are some ways we can all do our part to conserve water in our homes, schools, and businesses.

Do You Hear Water Running?

Some leaks are easy to hear, but others are not. To check for hidden leaks, periodically turn off all water-using appliances in the house. Read your water meter, and then check it again after twenty minutes. If the meter reading has increased, you probably have a leak. Check all shower heads, indoor and outdoor faucets, and toilet tanks. Don’t forget to check the hot water heater and behind the refrigerator and washing machine too. Undetected leaks can waste hundreds of gallons of water each month. Fixing leaks in your home is an easy way to lower your water bill and help conserve water.

Where's Your Shut-Off Valve?

Know where your master water shut-off valve is located! Shut-off valves can generally be found where the water pipe enters the structure. Family members and coworkers should learn where they are located and how to turn them off in the event of an emergency, such as when a faucet becomes a fountain or a pipe inside a wall bursts. It could save hundreds of gallons of water and prevent thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your home or business.
