Ralston Road Project

Project Update

Phase One (Upham to Yukon Streets) of the Ralston Road Improvement Project was anticipated to begin in September 2019. The Engineering Division completed their final construction plans and bid packages and advertised Phase One to bidders. The City did not receive any construction bids for this first phase that were within the project budget. The construction industry in Colorado is experiencing record demand along with labor shortages. This can impact a contractor's ability to fully staff major projects and increase costs. In order to be good stewards of City resources, the Engineering Division is looking into acceptable solutions to deliver the project within budget and with the least inconvenience for our businesses and residents.

Phase Two (Yukon to Garrison Streets): Preliminary construction plans were recently completed and, this fall, the right-of-way acquisition process will begin. Construction is currently scheduled to begin Fall/Winter 2020. Look for updates regarding the projects here and on all the City's communication platforms.

Description

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to provide sustainable infrastructure for our growing city, we are undertaking a project to widen and improve the Ralston Road corridor between Upham and Yukon Streets (Phase One) followed by the segment between Yukon and Garrison Streets (Phase Two).

Ralston Road is an arterial roadway and a major east-west corridor for Arvada’s transportation network, serving 23,000 vehicle trips each day. It provides connectivity to major north-south corridors including three State Highways (SH-95/Sheridan Blvd., SH-121/Wadsworth Blvd., and SH-72/Ward Road). The Regional Transportation District (RTD) operates five bus lines using portions of Ralston Road. Major destinations served by Ralston Road include Olde Town, Stenger/Lutz Sports Complex, City Hall, Ralston Central Park, and the Ralston Creek North shopping area.

Highlights of the project

  • Creation of 8-foot wide pedestrian path (similar to a trail), allowing cyclists access to parks and trails. This sidewalk width exceeds ADA minimums and supports the needs of Arvada’s aging population. It also allows pedestrians to walk side-by-side or with their pets and creates distance from the travel lanes.

  • Widen the existing 9 foot vehicle travel lanes to 11 feet. This will help decrease sideswipe accidents.

  • Installation of gutter pans to provide an additional 1 feet of space for the accumulation of rain, snow, and debris outside of the travel lanes.

  • Widen the center two-way-left-turn lane to 12 feet to increase driver safety/comfort while stopped between passing vehicles.

  • Reconstruction of aging traffic signals with new technology to improve traffic progression.

What to Expect During Construction

  • Access to all businesses along Ralston Rd will be maintained throughout construction.

  • RTD service along Ralston Road will continue during construction.

  • There will be lane closures and periodic closures of roads that cross Ralston Road.

  • Construction will be conducted in stages in order to efficiently use resources. It may appear that construction moves around or stops and starts in certain areas.

  • There will be disruptions to your typical travel on Ralston Road. We encourage all residents to consider alternate routes and plan for additional travel time.
