Project Overview

Dan Pumphrey of the Streets Division pitched a proposal to senior students at the Colorado School of Mines to conduct a field research project to test the efficacy of salt and other materials used on our roadways to manage snow and ice. Six students from Mines will participate in the field research study. The study is expected to last through May 2020 when students will present their results.

The City of Arvada is interested in testing different types of salt on roads during snow events. Through student research, we want to learn:

  • Which type of salt has the greatest effect (melting, traction, less material use, etc.)

  • How we can reduce salt runoff into storm water

  • How to minimize roadway corrosion

  • How to save money

Of the six Mines students, two are civil engineering students, one is a mechanical engineering student, and two are environmental engineering students. This cross collaboration of disciplines will help create a robust research project. We look forward to sharing the results of the study with the community in the Spring.
