City of Arvada lifts watering restrictions maintenance work on Ralston Reservoir complete

The City of Arvada is pleased to announce that the late season watering restrictions implemented in October 2021 will be lifted on or around May 1, 2022. Denver Water notified the City in early March 2022 that maintenance work was complete at Ralston Reservoir and the process to refill the reservoir had begun.

Refilling Ralston Reservoir will take several weeks. Following the refilling process, the City’s Water Treatment team will calibrate the treatment process to provide the best quality finished water for residents of Arvada. With Ralston Reservoir back in service, the City will once again have the service capacity to provide water for indoor and outdoor use.

Residents should refer to before using their irrigation systems for up-to-date watering guidelines. Until May 1, 2022, residents may only use handheld watering devices. Residents may choose to start up their irrigation systems in April but may not use them until after May 1st.

While the current watering restrictions will be lifted on or around May 1, 2022, the City encourages residents to follow standard watering guidelines:

  • Water no more than three days per week.

  • Do not water lawns between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

  • Do not waste water by allowing it to pool in gutters, streets and alleys.

  • Do not waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt.

  • Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.

  • Do not water while it is raining or during high winds.

It is important to note that new watering guidelines may be issued based on precipitation levels and community demand. Current watering guidelines are available at

In October 2021, the Ralston Reservoir was taken offline and drained in order for Denver Water to perform maintenance activities to the reservoir. The construction work at Ralston Reservoir is part of Denver Water’s North System Renewal, which involves major infrastructure upgrades to pipes, canals, tunnels and dams in Boulder, Gilpin, Grand and Jefferson counties. The City of Arvada thanks Denver Water for their diligence in completing this important project.
