Organized Waste Hauling Public Hearing June 15; City Offers Ways to Learn More

The next important step in the public process for the City of Arvada’s Organized Waste Hauling Project will occur at the June 15 City Council public hearing, where City Council will hear and consider public comment and make a decision.

Arvada residents have consistently indicated that an efficient waste hauling system is important to them. Based on results from the last three community surveys and recommendations from the Arvada Sustainability Advisory Committee, the City Council directed the City team to explore an organized waste hauling system that would reduce wear and tear on City streets, pollution, and costs for most residents while increasing recycling options and the quality of customer service to the community.

“The Arvada Sustainability Advisory Committee has heard from many residents during our four-plus years of outreach, and the majority say that they want lower costs, more choices and recycling services, fewer trucks on their neighborhood streets, and better customer service,” said Arvada Sustainability Advisory Committee Chair Keegan Conley. “Seventy percent of the country already benefits from an organized waste hauling system, which we believe is the most efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly way of transporting our waste to the landfill while also greatly increasing the recycling options in our community.”

Through a competitive acquisition process, the City team has negotiated a proposed agreement with a waste hauler that addresses the project requirements. Council is considering the proposed agreement and the related ordinance as part of the June 15 meeting. The ordinance and proposed agreement are available at arvada.org/waste-hauling.

As part of an ongoing effort to ensure the community is informed about the project, the City is offering several outreach opportunities in advance of the Public Hearing. On Thursday, May 28, the City team will host a remote public forum, which will include a presentation of the organized system followed by a community question and answer session.

Members of the public may submit questions and feedback for the forum in advance and during the forum by emailing WasteHauling@arvada.org. Those who do not have access to email may submit questions in advance during business hours until 5 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at 720-898-7000. The forum will be broadcast live on Comcast channels 8 and 880 and at arvada.org/live-stream. A recording of the forum will be available online the following day.

The City is also offering opportunities to share feedback on the Speak Up Arvada online engagement platform, and to ask questions by email (WasteHauling@arvada.org), by phone (720-898-7000) or at in-person, by-appointment office hours events tentatively planned for early in June, pending continued rollout of in-person services. Strict Safer-at-Home safety guidelines will be followed.

For more information about the project and for updates regarding the in-person events will be available at arvada.org/waste-hauling.
