(Arvada, CO) – The W. Michael Northey Foundation of the Arvada Police Department awarded $8,700 in scholarships to Arvada area high school students.
The W. Michael Northey Foundation is named for an Arvada police officer killed in the line of duty after being struck by a car while making an arrest on August 13, 1979. Northey was very active with the youth of the community and the Foundation was established shortly after his death to aid police officers in need and provide financial assistance to Arvada students wanting to pursue a degree in higher education.
Previously, scholarships were only available to students wanting to pursue a degree in law enforcement, but in 2013, the Northey Board elected to open the process up to all students.
“The new board of the Northey Foundation determined that to fulfill the mission of the Foundation, it meant supporting anyone who wanted to contribute to the betterment of our community, not just those wanting to enter into law enforcement,” said Cathy Pickering, board president of the Northey Foundation.
Award recipients are:
- Soledad Sierra, Arvada High School
- Austin Park, Red Rocks Community College
- Jonathan Gretz, Pomona High School
- Rachel Parrent, Arvada High School
- Brandt Maestas, Arvada High School
Scholarship recipients will be recognized at a reception on Thursday, June 12 at 5 p.m. at Arvada Police headquarters.
The Northey Foundation is supported through donations and two fundraising events, a golf tournament held each fall at Arrowhead Golf Course (August 11, 2014)and donations at the Shred-A-Thon event, being held on October 18.
