At a recent staff meeting, District Attorney Scott Storey awarded Arvada Police Officer Jim Becker with the DA’s highest honor, the Courage Coin. This award is reserved for those special individuals who deserve recognition for their commitment and dedication to the community.
“I can’t say enough good things about Officer Becker,” said Storey. “He has made an extraordinary impact on the lives of seniors in Arvada. He has served as Senior Liaison with zeal and passion, pouring his energy into building relationships with seniors and putting prevention practices in place.”
Officer Jim Becker's Commitment to Seniors
Officer Jim Becker has been with the Arvada Police Department since 1983 and was appointed Senior Liaison in 2006.
He immediately began his research on safety and crime issues facing seniors. He saw the effect of crimes against seniors and found ways he could help to keep them safe.
Beginning with retirement communities and community centers in Arvada, Officer Becker set out to find where crimes against seniors were taking place. He recognized right away that seniors are particularly vulnerable.
Officer Becker noticed when seniors are victims of crime, the elderly tend to be more embarrassed and fearful. Seniors worry they might lose their independence should family members decide they can no longer take care of themselves.
Programs Instituted by Officer Becker
Many programs designed to empower and assist seniors in Arvada were championed by Officer Becker, including: the File of Life program, Colorado Life Trak, Solicitor Information cards, and Survive to 95 (senior safe driving awareness).
He also produced a monthly newsletter, “The Senior Siren,” which is distributed to senior centers and retirement communities.
“Jim Becker is a dedicated police officer with more than 25 years of service to the community. Whether it’s been through his role as a D.A.R.E. officer as the department’s Senior Liaison officer, Jim has had a positive impact on thousands of lives throughout his career,” said Deputy Chief Gary Creager of the Arvada Police Department.
The Courage Coin
Storey created the Courage Coin to honor special individuals whose courage and tenacity deserve special recognition. There is one coin for prosecutors, one coin for law enforcement and one coin for citizens the District Attorney wants to honor.
With this coin Storey recognized Officer Jim Becker, a special individual in law enforcement who goes the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of others.
The Arvada Police Department agrees with Jefferson County DA Storey and commends Officer Becker for a job well done.
