Feb 8,  2011 - City Manager Announces Intention to Retire

Arvada, CO……..After a combined 25 years of service with the City of Arvada, City Manager Craig G. Kocian informed the City Council of his intention to retire effective September 30, 2011.

In 1972, Kocian was appointed an Administrative Assistant to the City Manager in Arvada.  He was promoted to Assistant to the City Manager a year later and, in 1976, was appointed Arvada’s City Manager.   At that time, Arvada had a population of 86,000; Kocian, at age 31, was the youngest city manager in the nation in cities of over 50,000.  In 1983 Kocian was appointed the Assistant City Manager of Oakland, California and became Oakland’s City Manager in 1993.  He returned to Arvada as City Manager in March of 1997.

Craig Kocian is actively engaged in many professional associations to support and further his chosen profession, including the International City/County Manager’s Association (ICMA), the Alliance for Innovation, the Colorado City/County Management Association, and the Colorado Municipal Management Assistants’ Association.  He has won numerous awards including the ICMA 2005 International Award in Memory of Orin F. Nolting, the Distinguished Service Award from the Denver Regional Council of Governments, and several Local Government Innovation Awards.  In 2004, in conjunction with Arvada’s centennial celebration, Kocian was named one of the 100 most influential people in Arvada’s history in the publication Arvada Profiles:  Stories of the People Who Most Influenced Our First 100 Years.

“Craig Kocian has made an indelible impact on the Arvada community, and for that the Arvada City Council is truly grateful,” stated Arvada Mayor Bob Frie.  “His shoes will be tough to fill.”  The City Council has initiated a national search for the new City Manager.  The recruitment and selection process is expected to take eight to nine months.
