Wadsworth Bypass / Grandview / Railroad Underpass Project General Information

The Wadsworth Bypass / Grandview Avenue / BNSF Railroad Underpass project involves the construction of two bridges over the Wadsworth Bypass, one to carry the railroad tracks and one for Grandview Avenue. The railroad tracks and Grandview Avenue will remain at about their current elevation and the Wadsworth Bypass will be lowered nearly 25 feet under the new bridges. During construction of the project Wadsworth Bypass traffic will be routed onto a temporary six lane detour on the west side of the existing Wadsworth Bypass. After the completion of the project, Grandview Avenue will not have access to the Wadsworth Bypass.

The City of Arvada and the Colorado Department of Transportation, using funds from both agencies and money from the Federal Highway Administration and the Denver Regional Council of Governments, conducted an Environmental Assessment on this project in 2004-2005. A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was issued by the Federal Highway Administration in August of 2005.

Final design for the project has been completed and CDOT has awarded the construction contract to Hamon Contractors. Work on the project started in September 2006 and is expected to last about 18 - 24 months. The estimated total cost for the project, including design, property purchase and construction is $32 million, of which $26 million is from federal and state sources and $6 million is from the City of Arvada.
