Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies happen anytime, anywhere, without warning.

So it seems an oxymoron to talk about "emergency preparedness".

Yet there are things we can all do to make emergency situations a little easier to deal with.

The City's Emergency Preparedness site offers some basic information about

• preparing your home,
• preparing your work site, and
• preparing your family

for possible disaster situations.

It also provides a summary of some of the programs and initiatives provided by Arvada.  Emergency Preparedness also participates and coordinates with the City to provide for the well-being of its citizens.

Emergency Management Coordinator

In May of 2002, the City of Arvada and the Arvada Fire Protection District (AFPD) entered into an Interagency Agreement (IGA) creating the position of Emergency Management Coordinator for the city and fire district.

The IGA creating this position was unique in Colorado.  It represents the truly cooperative approach the city and AFPD have taken towards preparing the citizens of Arvada to face emergency situations.  Jim Lancy was hired as the city and district's first Emergency Management Coordinator.

Mr. Lancy was formerly with the Aurora Fire Department and served as the City of Aurora's Emergency Management Coordinator from 1997 - 2002. He is a certified emergency manager with the State of Colorado and the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM).

Mr. Lancy's responsibilities include

• keeping current and functionally testing the city's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP),
• managing the city and district's Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and
• providing preparedness training for first responders, city and district employees, and the citizens of Arvada.
