The summer session for the Healthy Relationship Classes for Teens has been cancelled.

The Healthy Relationship Series: What is it?

Arvada Municipal Court Teen Services has collaborated with The ROAD Drop-in Center for Youth (a Division of Jefferson Center for Mental Health) to provide this series of classes to Arvada teens free of charge. This ten-week course is open to anyone 13 – 16 years of age. Participants will look at how to create and maintain healthy successful relationships with peers, family, and the world around them. The curriculum for this series of classes was created in part using feedback received from youth.
 

When and Where Classes Take Place

When: For future dates, please check back in the fall. Since these are "drop-in" classes, participants may attend any or all classes in the series.
 
Where: Designated conference rooms at Arvada City Hall, 8101 Ralston Road, Arvada, CO 80002 (Please meet in lobby outside the Anne Campbell Room prior to class.)

Curriculum Overview

Week One: Welcome

Group members will participate in a number of “getting to know you activities.” They will also work together to create group norms and come to agreements on proper participation and behavior during groups to come.

Week Two: Family

Group members will look into their family dynamics and how those dynamics have affected them as individuals. Different activities presented will help them to discover more about family dynamics and what family means to them. There will also be discussions about issues associated family members with substance abuse and how this impacts the family.

Week Three: Dating and Consent

Participants will explore definitions of dating, love languages and respect. The activities will challenge participants to recognize how people have differing ideas of what dating is.  Attendees will explore what expressions of love are most important to them.  They will also learn concrete examples of what respect and limits look like within the context of dating. 

Week Four: Loss

Participants will be informed of the stages of grief, as well as ways to handle loss.  Participants will discuss unhealthy/healthy ways of dealing with grief.  They will also create a Loss Line to obtain a better insight into their own experiences with loss, death and dying and how they have handled these situations in the past. 

Week Five: GLBT

Participants will learn about various gender and sexual identities.  They will be asked to verbalize their first impressions with the term “LGBTQ” and get a chance to understand various terms.  They will discuss the impact that homophobia has on individuals and society.  They will be challenged to understand heterosexual privilege and how to be more sensitive to LGBTQ issues. 

Week Six: Privilege and Prejudice

Participants will be involved in a number of activities that will give them better insight into their own prejudice and stereotypes.  They will learn the definitions of prejudice, racism, sexism, classism, etc. and will be able to give examples of each.  In addition, they will discuss privilege and how it impacts their lives and the lives of others. 

Week Seven: Sexual Harassment

Participants will learn about the definition of sexual harassment.  They will be asked to develop examples of various types of verbal, nonverbal and physical sexual harassment.  Youth will be asked to work through different scenarios in which sexual harassment occurs.  They will gain ideas about how to address these issues and help support peers who are struggling with these situations. 

Week Eight: Emotions

Participants will explore a number of human emotions, including guilt, anger, forgiveness, happiness, etc.  They will learn how to recognize these emotions and how to better cope with them. 

Week Nine: Media and Social Media

Participants will be shown real examples of various objectifying advertisements.  They will be challenged to look at the ways in which media influences their perception of the world and themselves.  They will identify other examples that they have seen and consider how media can be used in positive and negative ways.  In addition, they will discuss the positive and negative aspects of social media.  Participants will be challenged to examine the impact that social media has on themselves, their peers and the world around them.  They will also receive information on how to safely and appropriately utilize social media sites.

Week Ten: Drugs and Alcohol

Participants will gain more insight into commonly used and abused substances.  They will learn to separate facts from fiction about different illicit and licit drugs, as well as the difference between using a drugs and abusing a drug.
