Gang Activity in Arvada
The City of Arvada is not immune to criminal gang activity, though gang crime tends to be gang-on-gang violence with little threat to the community-at-large.
The Criminal Investigations Bureau is quick to act in investigating gang crimes in order to minimize any impact on citizens. The Criminal Intelligence/Special Investigations Unit makes a point of continually investigating known criminal gangs and regularly attends metro wide gang investigation briefings.
Types of Gangs
A street gang is a group of people who unite for a common purpose and engage in violent, unlawful, criminal and antisocial behavior. They often claim control over certain territory and/or criminal activity in a community.
Criminal gangs are involved in narcotics distribution, crimes of violence, hate crimes, weapons violations, and property crimes.
Gangs are sometimes made up of one specific ethnic group out of convenience, but will generally mirror the demographics of their particular neighborhood or community.
Gang membership can be all male, all female or made up of both.
The City of Arvada has criminal street gangs, hate-motivated gangs, i.e. white supremacist/skinheads, tagging crews (graffiti artists) and outlaw motorcycle gangs active within our borders.
Gang members can be identified several ways. Many gangs tend to use colored clothing, sports team logos on clothing, a certain style of clothing, or clothing accessories to denote gang membership/affiliation.
Gang members will often admit membership or use the name of the gang when identifying themselves to others. They have their own specific hand signs to identify one another, use nicknames, and sport tattoos with nicknames and gang names.
Probably the easiest way to identify gang activity in your neighborhood is through knowledge your children bring home from school or a sudden increase in graffiti.
Gang prevention is an ongoing process involving patrol officers, detectives, school resource officers and most of all community members.
