Public Safety

The Arvada Police Department sets the standard for excellence in policing. Built on a foundation of honor, integrity and commitment, members of the department take great pride in providing exceptional police service to those who not only live and work in Arvada but also visit this outstanding community.

Policing in the City

The Department is comprised of 242.5 positions (172 sworn and 75.5 support staff) and the staff serves more than 100,000 residents.

While crime trends continually change and evolve, Arvada has routinely recorded a lower crime rate than many other Denver metropolitan area suburbs. Since no community is completely immune to crime, the Arvada Police Department engages in a number of programs and efforts to reduce crime and the fear of crime in our neighborhoods.

Crime & Disorder

Members of the Arvada Police Department work to reduce criminal activity and crime trends impacting the quality of life for citizens of Arvada. It is also the goal of officers to concentrate enforcement efforts on high crime areas, problem properties and prolific criminals operating in the city.

School Safety

Arvada assigns officers in the middle schools, high schools as well as an officer to serve in a handful of elementary schools in the city. The primary objective of this team is to reach the city’s youth by offering mentoring strategies, educational opportunities and/or enforcement activities. All of the School Resource Officers are dedicated to prevention within their school’s community, and recognize the importance of trust, respect and compassion with today’s young adults and our future leaders.

Traffic Safety

Officers work to reduce the number of traffic crashes in the city through education and enforcement activities. While all members of patrol are responsible for traffic enforcement, the Arvada Police Department utilizes a Traffic Unit consisting of motorcycle officers and officers using both marked and unmarked patrol cars to enforce traffic laws within the city.

Regionalization has been a focus for the department in an effort to combine resources and to address crime beyond the boundaries of the city. In recent years the West Metro Drug Task Force, Jefferson County Regional S.W.A.T. team, Metro Area Auto Theft Task Force and the Rocky Mountain Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory has enabled the Arvada Police Department and other neighboring jurisdictions to maximize resources in reducing crime in their respective communities.

Leader in the Nation

Others have recognized the Arvada Police Department for efforts to put forth one of the premier law enforcement agencies in the country. The Arvada Police Department was the first Colorado law enforcement agency and 18th  agency in the United States to achieve accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In order to achieve accreditation status, Arvada’s police department must meet 459 standards developed by CALEA. Arvada achieved its 8th Accreditation in 2010 and has been accredited for 24 years. Arvada is a CALEA Flagship agency, one of the highest honors bestowed upon a police department through the accreditation organization.
