Let's Fly a Kite--10th Annual Kite Festival
Blue skies, warm temperatures, a little bit of wind, a field full of kite flyers and almost 4,000 spectators. Presented by the Arvada Festivals Commission and its community partner, the Foothills Kite Club. The event celebrates National Kite Month with free activities including kite contests, kids activities, lots of food, and interesting community booths, making this one of the metro areas most intriguing festivals.
"It was amazing how all those kites got in the sky without major tangles", stated one enthusiastic guest last year.
Kite flying contests fill the sky with competitions in two age groups (10 & under or 11 & over) in four categories: highest kite, most visually appealing kite, smallest kite and largest kite. Judges from the Foothills Kite Club will award trophies to the top four competitors in both age groups. According to co-organizer Jody Weiland, "In past years, we have had over 200 contestants fly their kites".
Foothills Kite Club experts will entertain with elaborate high flying kites dancing to music or performing acrobatics throughout the day. There is room also for just plain kite flying and kites will be for sale or kids can make their own kites at a special booth.
It's not just about what's in the sky at this festival. Non-aerial activities include fun at the two jumping castles, sitting for the face painter, and watching the balloon twister's and the caricaturist's artistry. Other kids entertainment includes an arts and crafts booth with Dave Sullivan and the YMCA Kids Zone with lots of physical activity.
At noon, the perennial favorite, Jeffco Brass Band, entertains the crowd with a selection of tunes. Over twenty community booths with a variety of offerings and food will be selling scrumptious goodies to round out the activities.
Dudley Weiland, co-organizer says, "Last year's kite festival was the biggest we have ever had. By adding new activities each year, we add to the appeal". Whether flying a kite or watching the kites, this is the day for a family outing under Colorado's beautiful blue skies with lots of fun for everyone.
The Arvada Festivals Commission will produce seven varied large and small events in 2012, entertain over 45,000 guests annually, and is looking for members and event volunteers. For more information call 720-898-7400 or visit www.arvadafestivals.com.
