Join in on some fall fun!
It's Scarecrow Time!
Come join the free family fun activities at the 14th annual Festival of Scarecrows, Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Olde Town Arvada. Town Square (W. 57th Ave. and Olde Wadsworth) will be festooned with scarecrows, pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and Festival guess will celebrate the season throughout Olde Town at this event produced by Arvada Festivals Commission and Downtown Arvada Partnership.
All of Olde Town becomes the stomping ground for the Scarecrow Contest with lots of lively scarecrows created by individuals, businesses and organizations who will vie for votes from delighted Festival guests. Last year over twenty businesses and organizations entered scarecrows; this year prizes will be awarded in several categories. Enter your own special scarecrow in the Contest.
Along with scarecrow judging, enter the Giant Pumpkin Contest sponsored by the Arvada Gardeners or watch the weigh-in of these amazing giant gourds - past pumpkins have weighed over 200 pounds! Prizes will be awarded in several categories. The Gardeners will also have a variety of gourds and cornstalks on sale to decorate your own holiday festivities.
Kids, get your costumes on and march in the Kids' Costume Parade led by Brewster, the giant green dinosaur, from Coors Credit Union. Every parade entrant receives a bag of goodies and the show of costumes is delightful.
Check out the Pumpkin Patch and purchase your favorites to paint with a spooky or jolly face for Halloween. Proceeds from pumpkins sales will be donated to the Arvada Community Food Bank.
Everyone can enjoy a ride around Olde Town in a horse-drawn wagon and the little ones can explore the Kiddie "Cone Stalk" Maze. Admission to the maze is canned goods for the Arvada Community Food Bank.
Adding fun to the festivities are the community booths, food sales, spooky face painting, animal balloon twisting, and other fun activities.
As part of the Festival of Scarecrows, the Arvada Historical Society invites everyone to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Arvada Water Tower with festivities that start at 2:00 PM at the foot of the Water Tower, south of the train tracks near Olde Wadsworth Blvd. City Council members will be on hand to start the celebration with a few words and the Arvada Fire Protect District will have the 1925 Dodge fire truck on display along with other department vehicles. Firemen will be on hand to discuss modern fire and rescue techniques that have improved over the years. In 1910, at the original celebration of the new Water Tower, the water pressure was so strong it knocked the firemen off of their feet!?
Entertainment for the anniversary celebration is provided by Pomona High School choir and the celebration will be topped off with an anniversary cake.
The Festival of Scarecrows is free family fun, so come celebrate the autumn season with a "Boo" Fest for visitors of all ages! This event has grown every year and typically over 1,000 people join the fun.
