The Lake Arbor Optimists have named Arvada Police Detective Mike Roemer as its Police Officer of the Year for 2009.
The honor is based on Det. Roemer's diligence and dedication in investigating a homicide occurring in 2007.
Det. Mike Roemer began working one of the most comprehensive cases of his career on July 2, 2007.
A young male had been shot several times and died at the Castlegate Apartment Complex near the Lake Arbor Golf course.
For more than a year, Det. Roemer pursued numerous leads and was able to link two suspects to the case. Tracking down these suspects required trips to Arizona and California, and it also led to the discovery of a third suspect.
With the help of a Jefferson County District Attorney's investigator, several law enforcement agencies, an Arizona S.W.A.T. team, U.S. Marshals, and the nationally televised "America's Most Wanted" television show, all three suspects were apprehended.
One suspect is now serving a life sentence.
The second suspect pled guilty and the third suspect has been arrested and is awaiting trial later this year.
The Arvada Police Department congratulates Det. Roemer for this well-deserved honor.
