Arvada Police School Resource Officer Program Expanded

The Arvada Police Department rang in the new year by adding an eighth School Resource Officer to the School Services Unit. The new position will be dedicated as an elementary School Resource Officer (SRO).

In general, the elementary SRO duties will include academic instruction on a variety of safety topics, student mentoring, crime prevention, problem identification/solution, liaison to school PTA personnel, school administration and selected criminal investigations.

“It is our intention for this SRO’s primary focus to be in where an officer’s presence, classroom instruction and mentoring could have the greatest impact,” said Deputy Chief Gary Creager.

Citizen Volunteers to Help Supplement School Resource Officer

Additionally, the department is coordinating a contingent of volunteer citizens to supplement the efforts of the elementary SRO. These volunteers will act as representatives of the Arvada Police Department and will avail themselves to teach child safety programs in elementary schools throughout the city

The plan is to pilot these two endeavors in several elementary schools beginning in January. This first semester will be a test period and will be subject to modification and expansion.

The schools where the elementary SRO will serve include: Allendale, Lawrence and Russell.

“It’s critical the elementary school communities have access to a full service police officer to address issues impacting the students, school staff and residents of these areas,” said Deputy Chief Creager regarding the need for an additional school resource officer.

Creager adds he expects this program to be just as successful as the officers working in Arvada, Oberon and North Arvada middle schools and Arvada, Arvada West, Pomona and Ralston Valley high schools.

Officer Jim Becker has been selected for the assignment of the department’s inaugural elementary school resource officer.  He has served as a police officer with Arvada for 26 years. For 13 of those years, Officer Becker taught the D.A.R.E. program to thousands of students in Arvada’s elementary schools.
