Public Relations Coordinator for the Arvada Police Department
Arvada, CO….. Jill McGranahan, Public Relations Coordinator for the Arvada Police Department, is known around the City of Arvada organization as a social media expert. It therefore comes as no surprise that she has received national recognition from the Government Technology Research Alliance (GTRA).
On June 25, McGranahan received the GTRA Excellence in Social Media and Transparency Award for her exceptional efforts in engaging with and informing the citizens of Arvada. Of the many professionals nominated, she was one of three selected for consideration after both a vetting and voting process.
McGranahan’s work in social media has had considerable impact on the communications methodologies employed by the City and have greatly improved both the quality and content of conversation and connectivity with citizens. She was specifically recognized for her use of Facebook and Twitter as a powerful means of connecting with Arvada’s citizens. Over the past year, the quality, variety, and consistency of dialog that she has fostered has resulted in a 320% increase in Facebook likes and a 348% increase in Twitter followers. Literally thousands of citizens reliably turn to the Arvada Police Department’s social media presence to learn, to share, and to participate meaningfully in public safety and City discussions in real-time.
During the September 2013 floods, McGranahan communicated with citizens on Facebook and Twitter while coordinating with other emergency management personnel. The information that she shared, at all hours of the day and night, directly contributed to public safety and the well-being of the community. During hostage crises, inclement weather, child abductions, and other emergencies, she has similarly ensured that residents have access to essential knowledge, the freedom to inquire, and the respect to receive accurate and timely responses to their questions and concerns. Her accomplishments, however, extend well beyond crisis management. From drug take-back programs to animal rescues, and from a transition to sector-based policing to charity marathons, McGranahan keeps the Arvada community informed and actively engaged about a wide variety of topics. Her efforts epitomize how social media can help not only to strengthen democracy, but to buttress public safety and build communities.
McGranahan has been the Arvada PD Public Relations Coordinator since June 2012. “This award is a reflection of the incredible community in which we live and work,” she said. “Social media as a communication tool wouldn't work without the involvement and interaction of our residents, nonprofits and businesses.”
She concluded, “That I get to represent the Arvada Police and engage with people in such a dynamic way really is an honor for me.” Jill McGranahan, Public Information Officer for Arvada PD
