Candidates who are offered employment and are not certified as a Peace Officer in the State of Colorado will attend a police academy at the expense of the department in the position of Police Recruit. The academy runs 22 weeks and recruits are not required to live at the academy.
Recruits who fail any component of the academy training or the Colorado P.O.S.T. Board Certification Examinations will be dismissed from employment.
The Arvada Police Department is a member agency of the Jefferson County/Lakewood Police Regional Training Academy.
Mini Skills Program
Graduating candidates will return to Arvada Police Department for a two-week classroom orientation. The training will include skills necessary to assist candidates in transitioning from the academy setting to job specific duties at the Arvada Police Department.
Field Training Program
Certified candidates and graduating Police Recruits will then participate in the department's Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.
The FTO program is 17 weeks and involves candidates taking an active role in patrol duties while working a variety of shifts. Candidates will be assigned to separate training officers throughout the program, culminating in a two-week observation by a plain clothes officer.
The program includes daily evaluation of the new officer's performance.
