Voluntary Summer Lawn Watering Guidelines
At this time there are no mandatory restrictions for water uses. We are requesting that all water customers, including the City's parks and other facilities, comply with the following summer watering guidelines.
Water Your Lawn Only When Necessary!
Our drought experience has shown that lawns do very well being watered about twice a week, but during the hottest part of the summer a third day may be needed.
Don't Water Between the Hours of 10 AM to 6 PM
The hot period of the day is the least efficient time to water because much of the water quickly evaporates. Irrigating during the cooler part of the day or at night minimizes this loss.
Watering Time per Zone
The watering time per zone time should vary depending on the weather conditions. The following suggested watering time periods should keep your lawn healthy and green. Remember that some of your zones may require more watering time than others depending on soil conditions, sun exposure, etc., so adjust as needed.
Stationary Sprinkler Heads
- May - 11 Minutes
- June - 17 Minutes
- July - 20 Minutes
- August - 17 Minutes
- September - 11 Minutes
Rotating Sprinkler Heads
- May - 22 Minutes
- June - 34 Minutes
- July - 40 Minutes
- August - 34 Minutes
- September - 22 Minutes
Cycle & Soak Watering Method
Our soils contain a large amount of clay, making it tough for water to soak in very fast. The cycle and soak technique can be an efficient method for irrigating lawns. If you water your grass 3 times for 4 minutes each time, with an hour between cycles, your lawn will actually absorb more water than if you let the sprinklers run for 12 minutes straight.
The above practices should enable you to use less water and have a great looking lawn. We hope you will use these techniques and help conserve our water supplies. If you have questions or concerns, please call our water conservation hotline at 720-898-7805. Thank you.
