ARVADA, CO -- The Arvada Center offers a wide variety of classes for students of all ages in the visual arts, performing arts, and the humanities. The Center provides courses dedicated to educating and stimulating creativity in each of the participants. The following are just some of the many classes offered at the Arvada Center in November:

ACTING AND PERFORMING ARTS

Auditioning for Stage, Film and Commercials
This class is designed to help students learn the audition process for stage, film and commercials. Students learn how to find and work with an agent. They also discover how to prepare for an audition and what to do at the audition. This workshop covers everything from warming up the voice to handling the “sides” (script) for cold readings.
Ages: 16 – Adult

VISUAL ARTS

Color for Pastelists
Since pastels are not mixed the same way paint is, artists often find it difficult to create a desired color from a typically limited supply of pastels. This workshop teaches people who wish to work with pastels how to make the most of what they have.

Painting Like the Impressionists
This class is perfect for people who have always enjoyed the works of Monet and the impressionists and would like to learn their techniques. The class will begin with painting exercises first developed by Monet’s contemporary, Charles Hawthorne. The instructor of this course, Chuck Ceraso, studied with Henry Hensche, Hawthorne’s protégée. Hensche further developed the teaching methods as well as the impressionistic style in his own painting. Students in this course will discover the extraordinary world of light and color.

Watercolor Painting: For Those Who Can’t Draw a Straight Line Without a Ruler
In this class, students learn to create beautiful and vibrant watercolor paintings without the fear of making mistakes that cannot be corrected. During this course, participants discover simple water media techniques that enable them to control paint on paper. Demonstration and hands-on experience give participants early success with this fun and exciting medium. Anyone can learn enough about watercolor to thoroughly enjoy themselves during this workshop.

CERAMICS

Parent/Child Pottery
Parents and children work together to make functional vessels and whimsical clay objects. The basic techniques of working with clay are covered, and some projects may extend into mixed media. Potential projects include (but are not limited to) musical instruments, family portraits, whimsical sculptures, functional pieces and tableware. This class is a fun way for families to spend time together, and perhaps make gifts to give for the holidays. Extended families are welcome.

Gifts From the Heart
This class is an introduction to ceramics that teaches participants to make simple gifts like vases, trays and candlesticks for themselves or others. Students learn slab and coil construction as well as raku and majolica glazing. There is great opportunity for individual attention and instruction.

Raku Variations
This course is designed for students who have some experience in raku firing. The workshop covers traditional raku glazes and techniques as well as variations in the raku firing process. Students learn about variations such as slip resist (naked raku) and horse hair surface decoration.

Altered Forms
This four-week workshop on altering wheel-thrown forms focuses on the teapot. The instructor demonstrates how to throw, alter and assemble a teapot as well as a sugar and creamer set. Instructor Connie Christensen had been featured in both Clay Times and Pottery Making Illustrated for this hands-on, intermediate to advanced level workshop.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Basic Black and White Photography
This course is designed for those with little or no photographic knowledge, but it can also serve as a refresher course. Students learn the basic aspects of working with an adjustable camera, including focus, exposure and composition. Participants learn about simplified zone system, filters, special exposure and processing techniques and contrast evaluation.

HUMANITIES

Japanese Flower Arranging
Participants in this course explore beginning techniques and design principles of ikebana or Japanese flower arranging. Students work with flowers and greenery brought by the instructor and end up with an arrangement to take home.
