Summertime Pet Protection

The Tri-County Health Department recently reported a case of a rabid skunk in Adams County earlier this spring, and this was one of a handful of rabies cases reported in nearby Colorado counties this year.

Fortunately there was no known animal or human exposure to this skunk, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping pets protected from this deadly disease and making sure all vaccinations are up to date.

Safety Tips

Since pets are frequently outdoors more often as the weather gets warmer, the Arvada Police Department’s Animal Management Unit offers safety tips for your four-legged members of your family:

• Store all pet food inside. 
  
• Feed no more than your outdoor pet will finish in one feeding. 
  
• Do not let your pets roam freely since this can increase the chance they could be exposed to wild animals without your knowledge. 
  
• Contact your vet if your dog or cat is bitten or scratched by a wild animal. 
  
• Call your local animal management agency if you see a wild animal acting out of the ordinary. 
  
• Do not feed wild animals since this reduces their natural fear of humans
