Exhibition Discussion with Kirkland Founding Director and Curator Hugh Grant

Grant has chosen 80 exemplary and significant works that trace a stylistic evolution through distinct stages: realism, impressionism, surrealism, referential abstraction and pure abstraction. The early traditional phase, dating to 1875, includes works by Hamilton Hamilton, Helen Chain and Charles Partridge Adams. John Thompson, Robert Reid and Frank Vavra are among the featured impressionist-style painters. The surrealist movement is represented by Herbert Bayer, Julio de Diego and Mina Conant, while referential abstractionists (still recognizable subject matter) include Charles Bunnell, Edgar Britton and Edward Marecak. Pure abstraction (that is, non objective, pure design) is represented by Al Wynne, Dorothea Dunlop and of course the museum’s namesake, Vance Kirkland.
