Don’t Forget About West Nile Virus

As summer arrives, remember to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and the potential of contracting West Nile Virus.

The first step is to control mosquito breeding.  Mosquitoes lay eggs in still water; the eggs hatch in seven to ten days.  The City, in conjunction with Jefferson County, arranges for contractors to control mosquito breeding sources on public properties.  However, the most common mosquito found in Arvada breeds in artificial containers including flower pot saucers or even plugged rain gutters.   To help prevent mosquito breeding, change bird baths and wading pools at least weekly, or add chemicals that can kill mosquito larvae but not harm fish or other aquatic life. Drain any standing water caught in planting pots, tarps, tires, etc. after rainstorms and eliminate all standing water on your property.

Protect Yourself!

  • Limit outside activity around dawn and dusk.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as lightweight pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors.
  • Apply insect repellant that contains DEET.  Follow directions carefully.
  • Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
