In 1972, Jefferson County residents voted to tax themselves one-half of one percent on sales to create and sustain one of the premiere Open Space programs in the country. Using a formula based on motor vehicle registrations, a portion of the Open Space Fund is distributed to the cities within Jefferson County to support the community's park and open space priorities. The remaining funds are utilized by the Open Space program to acquire, maintain and provide non-motorized, trail-based recreation within the unincorporated area of the County in balance with protection of the natural resources entrusted to our care. Presently, Jefferson County Open Space has acquired over 50,000 acres within the cities and unincorporated area, and manage 30 parks/properties for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
