Buddy…The Buddy Holly Story
The Man…The Music…The Legend
Before the Beatles, before Elvis,
there was Buddy Holly. This award-winning, rockin'-boppin' musical revives the
1950's icon who defined the future of rock-and-roll. In an electrifying musical
celebration, two of Holly's unforgettable performances are recreated: the Crickets'
appearance at the Apollo Theatre and his final concert with Ritchie Valens and
JP Richardson, the Big Bopper. Audiences of all ages will find "It's So Easy"
to fall in love with Buddy.

Capitol Steps
Political Satire at Its Best
A presidential election year
provides excellent food for political satire, and the Capitol Steps gang will
break through the campaign rhetoric that's been driving you crazy. A night full
of good-natured ribbing, bipartisan of course, is just what these political pundits
dish out. No matter who's in the headlines, the Capitol Steps are equal opportunity
offenders. They'll also share some barbed vignettes from their latest CD, I. This evening
will help you regain the perspective you'll need to make it through to Election
Day.

GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
Summer of Cycles:
Motorcycles from the Harry Mathews and Jim Dillard Collections
As an unknown author
philosophically remarked, "Four wheels move the body; two wheels move the
soul." Most motorcycle enthusiasts would say amen to that. Perhaps no other
single object of industrial design better epitomizes 20th and now 21st
century fascination with speed and power, as well as more abstract notions of
freedom (sometimes even rebellion), progress and danger. And as the exhibition
further contends, motorcycles are art objects too, the aesthetic sum of
technology and innovation, yet typically styled and adorned to communicate
individual personality. Arvadan Harry Mathews and Jim Dillard have generously
lent classic cycles from their considerable personal collections for this
exhibition.

Spokes
Though propelled by legs rather than engines, bicycles
are, of course, two-wheelers also. To the rider, whether a young person
traversing the neighborhood, an adult for recreation and exercise, or an avid
racer on a strenuous trek, the soul may be just as moved. In conjunction with Summer of Cycles, the Center offers Spokes, a companion exhibit that
celebrates the bicycle in works of art and as works of art. Well-known featured
artists include Tony Ortega, Phil Bender, Brenda Vang, Justin Beard, Zach
Smith, Melissa Moore, Suzanne Faris,
Casey McGuire, Adam Driscoll, Danyl Cook and Paul Yalowitz.

Haley Mariah: Worn
Out – from the Inside Out
Haley Mariah's dry-humored
pieces appear turned inside out. Stuffed animals, innocent pop-culture icons,
suddenly and ironically bare their darker, inner selves. By association, then,
the artist exposes and guardedly accounts her own obscure interior, her life's
confrontations as a child, life's epiphanies on moving into young adulthood,
her feeling sometimes vulnerable and frustrated as a young woman, all the more
as a woman artist.

ARVADA CENTER PLAYGROUND
A 343-foot-long "sea-saurus"
named Squiggles is the featured element of the Arvada Center's playground. Squiggles—who was named Best Sea Monster by Westword—is a multi-colored, multi-textured concrete sculpture.
Kids can explore Squiggles by climbing around, over and under him. The
playground also includes a large sand box with three additional concrete
sculptures and trashcans that talk back when garbage is placed in them.
Squiggles is wheelchair accessible and his various textures offer a tactile
experience for blind children. The playground is open every day.
